Ukraine Conflict Puts Pressure on Trump
us, ukraine, russia, europe - US President-elect Donald Trump, who promised to end the Russia-Ukraine war in 24 hours during his election campaign, has yet to develop a peace plan that will satisfy both Ukraine and Russia as his inauguration approaches.
US President-elect Donald Trump, who pledged to end the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours during his election campaign, has not been able to develop a peace plan that will satisfy Ukraine or Russia as his inauguration day draws near.
Trump's special representative, General Keith Kellogg, has postponed his planned visits to Ukraine and European capitals until at least January 20. Kellogg had prepared a simple plan two months ago to end the Russia-Ukraine war. According to this plan voiced by Trump, the US would first ask Ukrainian President Zelenski to sit down with Russian President Putin. If Zelenski refused, military aid to Ukraine would be cut off. Similarly, Trump would ask Putin to come to the negotiating table. Trump had stated that if Putin rejected the proposal, the US would increase military aid to Ukraine fivefold.
However, the past two months have shown that the plan is not working. Ukraine has taken the stance that 'We are the country under attack. The US should ensure Putin withdraws from our territory to end the war.' Russia, on the other hand, declared the 2014 change of government in Ukraine as illegal and stated that Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson regions should now be considered as Russian territory.
