Ukraine's military forces have captured two North Korean soldiers during clashes in the Kursk region, according to a statement by President Volodymyr Zelensky. The soldiers, who were found alive but injured, have been taken to Kiev for questioning. Zelensky highlighted concerns about North Korean involvement in the conflict and the discovery of Russian passports on the soldiers.
Zelensky stated that Russian forces had been executing wounded North Korean soldiers to conceal evidence of North Korean participation in the conflict. He emphasized the difficulty faced by Ukrainian troops in capturing the two soldiers alive. Zelensky also announced that Ukraine would exchange the captured soldiers for Ukrainian prisoners held by Russia.
One of the captured soldiers is reported to be 26 years old, while the other is 20 years old. Video footage released by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) showed the soldiers in custody in Kiev. The SBU revealed that one soldier was captured by Ukrainian special forces on January 9, while the other was caught by Ukrainian paratroopers. The soldiers sustained injuries, with one having a wounded jaw and the other a broken leg.
The investigation found a Russian military ID card issued under a false name from Tuva region on one of the soldiers. The soldier claimed to have received the ID in Russia and had undergone a week of training with Russian forces. The other soldier, who had no documents on him, believed he was sent to Russia for training while serving in the North Korean military.
