Two dead in infamous sailing race in Australia
sydney - Two sailors have died in separate incidents during the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, organizers reported on Friday.
Both crew members were hit by booms as the yachts sailed along the coast of New South Wales towards Hobart in Tasmania after departing from Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day. Their fellow crew members tried in vain to resuscitate them.
The race committee is not providing further details on the deaths as the police are still investigating and some family members have not been notified. 'Our thoughts are with the crews, families, and friends of those who have passed away,' a statement said.
New South Wales police reported that the crews of the yachts informed them of the two deaths during the night. At the time of the fatal incidents, there was a strong wind blowing at 25 to 30 knots. The race organization claims to be launching an investigation to improve safety at the event.
The Sydney to Hobart is one of the most famous offshore yacht races. Despite taking place during the Australian summer, storms at sea often create cold, rough, and demanding conditions for the crew. In 1998, weather conditions were so extreme that five ships sank and six people lost their lives.
