Officers responded to the first shooting shortly after 3:30 p.m. local time, where a total of nine victims were involved. Upon arrival, police found eight victims with gunshot wounds, with a ninth victim later taken to the hospital. About 45 minutes later, police received a report of a second shooting at a different location in the city. One person was killed, another injured individual was taken to the hospital and later succumbed to injuries. A third person was injured in this shooting.
Thousands of people had gathered on Sunday for the annual Nine Times Social Aid & Pleasure Club celebration. Nine Times is part of the city's black community cultural heritage. It is one of the dozens of social aid and pleasure clubs originally established as a way for black residents to support each other in difficult times during the Jim Crow era, a period between 1880 and 1965 marked by laws enforcing racial segregation in the southern United States.
