The future president of the US, Donald Trump, has been eyeing Greenland and Panama for a while now. When asked by a journalist whether he would exclude military or economic pressure in his attempts to take over the autonomous Danish island and the Central American canal state, Trump replied, "No, I can't guarantee either." He added, "What I can say is that we need them for economic security."
Donald Trump Jr. paid a brief visit to Greenland on Tuesday. The government of the island stated that he was there as a private individual. Upon arrival in the capital Nuuk, Junior stated, "We will treat you well," without providing further details. Shortly after, his father took to his social media platform, Truth, and wrote, "This is a deal that needs to happen." According to him, Greenlanders and the Free World need security, protection, strength, and PEACE!
Canada is also on Trump's wishlist. However, our neighbors to the north can breathe a sigh of relief as the incoming president expressed that he would exclude military means in their case. Nevertheless, he is not ruling out pressuring the Canadian government to agree to an Anschluss. Sanctions are a real possibility. Trump believes that Canada "should be a [American] state." He perceives the border between the US and its neighbor as nothing more than an "artificially drawn line" on a map.
The governments in Copenhagen – Greenland being an autonomous territory of Denmark –, Panama City, and Ottawa have all reiterated their reluctance to entertain the idea of an American 'takeover.' Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that there is a greater chance of a snowball surviving in hell than Canada joining the United States.
