Trump's Defense Secretary Nominee Describes North Korea as Nuclear Power
united states - Trump's defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth describes North Korea as a nuclear power posing a threat to global stability.
Donald Trump's nominee for Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has described North Korea as a nuclear power posing a threat to global stability. Ahead of his confirmation hearing in the U.S. Senate, Hegseth submitted written responses to the Armed Services Committee, addressing the geopolitical situation in the Pacific region.
Hegseth referred to North Korea as a "nuclear power" posing a threat to global stability, stating that the country's nuclear status, focus on increasing the range of nuclear-capable missiles, and enhanced cyber capabilities pose a threat to stability in the Korean Peninsula, the Indo-Pacific region, and globally.
Highlighting the importance of military cooperation with allies in the region, Hegseth emphasized the need for increasing burden-sharing among U.S. allies in the region to strengthen deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.
Hegseth's characterization of North Korea as a "nuclear power" may spark debates as the U.S. has not formally recognized North Korea as a nuclear state. Many U.S. officials refrain from explicitly labeling the Pyongyang regime as a "nuclear power" in order not to legitimize its illegal weapons program.
The Senate Armed Services Committee, comprised of 14 Republicans and 13 Democrats, will evaluate Hegseth's hearing before referring it to the Senate floor for approval. If confirmed by a simple majority in the Senate, Hegseth could assume the position of Defense Secretary.
