Tourist killed in shark attack at Egyptian resort: swimming ban imposed in Marsa Alam
marsa alam - A tourist has been killed in the Egyptian coastal town of Marsa Alam after a shark attack. Another person was injured in the attack. Authorities have declared a state of emergency in the area and imposed a swimming ban for at least two days.
The nationality of the victims is not yet known. The attack took place in deep water of the Red Sea, outside the designated swimming area of the resort where the tourists were staying. The Ministry has declared a state of emergency in the area of the attack and imposed a swimming ban for at least two days.
Shark attacks in the Red Sea are extremely rare. The last similar incident there occurred in 2023, when a tiger shark killed a Russian person in the Egyptian city of Hurghada.
Last month, a boat capsized in Marsa Alam, resulting in the death of five people and seven others missing.
On Saturday, a 40-year-old man died in Australia after a shark attack off the coast. "The man was fishing with family members when he was bitten by a shark," police said. He suffered fatal injuries and died an hour and a half later. The 40-year-old victim was a youth pastor at the Cathedral of Praise Church in Rockhampton, a city in Queensland, Australian media report.
The last fatal shark attack in Australia was in December 2023, when a teenager was killed in the state of South Australia. Since 1791, more than 1,200 shark incidents have been recorded, with more than 250 resulting in fatalities.
