Turkish Airlines has resumed its flights to Syria with the Istanbul-Damascus route after a 13-year hiatus. The first planned flight to the Syrian capital, Damascus, after 13 years took off from Istanbul Airport with the wide-body aircraft having the flight code 'TK 846'.
Some passengers who arrived at Istanbul Airport in the morning showed signs of joy at the boarding gate. Many Syrians expressed their happiness at returning to their country after years of exile, with some seen carrying the Syrian revolution flag.
A total of 349 passengers went through ticket and passport controls to board the plane bound for Damascus International Airport.
One passenger, Fatma Zehra, who came to Turkey when she was 2 years old, expressed her happiness at returning to the land where she was born with her family. She mentioned her excitement to see her country for the first time and her upcoming visit to her grandmother in Aleppo.
Another passenger, Ahmet Kiraz, who arrived in Turkey in 2012, shared his unexpected joy of returning to his homeland after years of uncertainty. He described feeling like he was in a dream and expressed his gratitude towards everyone who made his return possible, saying, 'I am returning to my country with today's first flight, recording every moment. I feel like I'm in a dream. May God bless everyone in Turkey.'
