beijing - AI chatbots and robots are becoming increasingly popular in China as people seek emotional support and companionship from them.

More and more people in China are turning to special AI chatbots and robots for comfort. These AI companions can react empathetically to human emotions, to the point where they are now being viewed as romantic partners and confidants.

"Better than a real man," writes Wang, a 25-year-old woman from Xi’an, on Chinese social media. She describes her romantic relationship with a chatbot developed by a Shanghai-based company. The chatbot engages in conversations with her, watches movies with her, and uplifts her when she is feeling down.

Wang is not alone in having an 'AI boyfriend'. Young people in China, in particular, are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence for emotional support. This has led to the emergence of the AI companionship technology industry, which caters to the emotional needs of users.

While physical robots in the form of humans and animals like dogs are still in the early stages, virtual characters in games and apps have advanced significantly. Apps like Wantalk allow users to interact with customizable virtual characters, engaging in deep conversations that are stored for future reference.

The AI companionship industry in China is rapidly growing, with products experiencing a 30% monthly increase in popularity. The industry focuses on entertainment, education, and mental health care, addressing issues such as loneliness and aging population.

Experts state that AI companions will continue to evolve, offering more natural language processing and 3D effects. Chinese companies have started launching software designed to create lifelike AI experiences, aiming for more personalized interactions.

While some embrace the idea of AI companions, concerns have been raised regarding privacy and emotional dependence on technology. Experts warn that excessive reliance on AI could lead to emotional harm and isolation, especially among vulnerable users.

Chinese authorities are urged to establish guidelines to protect user privacy and ensure the ethical development of AI companionship technology. The United Nations and experts emphasize the importance of regulating emotional artificial intelligence to safeguard individuals, particularly children.

AI expert Liang Zheng highlights the potential benefits and risks of AI companions. While they can offer stress relief, excessive reliance on AI may result in emotional damage and detachment from reality. Some social media reviews express frustration over AI companions forgetting personal information, underscoring the need for caution.
