Teen dies after hitting bridge while making video on top of metro in Vienna
vienna, austria - A tragic accident occurred in Vienna, Austria, where a teenager lost his life and another one got seriously injured while making a video on top of a metro by hitting a bridge.
One of the teenagers (18) who was also on top of the Vienna U4 metro on Tuesday, is still in a coma in the hospital with serious head injuries. It is uncertain if he will ever wake up.
Two other teenagers who were with them, miraculously uninjured, posted the videos online despite the terrible accident, only to remove them later. The footage shows the daredevils initially lying flat on the metro wagon, but then becoming increasingly careless. Two are lying on the roof while the other two film them from behind. The front pair decides to stand up, posing for the camera, unaware of the approaching footbridge. They are hit.
The youngsters had their backs facing the direction of the metro. A preliminary investigation suggests, as per the German newspaper Bild, that they were unable to hear the warning shouts from their friends. One of them had to be resuscitated on the spot. On Saturday, doctors in Austria confirmed that the 17-year-old did not make it despite emergency surgery. His organs will now be donated. Doctors say, "Especially when a child dies, it has something comforting for the family."
According to the hospital, the survival chances of the 18-year-old still in a coma are quickly diminishing. He and his deceased friend were from the Czech Republic. The other two boys (13, 16) from Austria survived the so-called metro surfing almost unharmed.
At the time of the accident, the metro was traveling at approximately 50 km/h. Transport company Wiener Linien is now urgently warning against the illegal internet trend: "We urge people to refrain from such careless and life-threatening actions. No video, dare, or selfie in the world is worth stepping on a metro or tram and risking your life," said a spokeswoman.
Passengers who notice such situations are advised by the transport company to use the emergency call equipment on the platforms or in the metro.
