In Sweden, the right-wing extremist politician Rasmus Paludan has been sentenced to four months in prison for protests where he burned the Quran. A court in Malmö convicted him on Tuesday for inciting hatred during two protests in 2022 where he insulted Muslims and set fire to the holy book for Muslims.
According to the judge, criticizing Muslims and the Quran in public is allowed. However, in this case, the statements were "solely intended to defame and offend Muslims." Paludan has indicated that he will appeal the ruling.
In 2023, Paludan also held a series of Quran burnings. It is believed that these were largely the reason for Turkey's refusal to allow Sweden to join NATO.
