Successful Face Transplantation in Cleveland Hospital
The hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, has successfully performed a nearly full face transplant for the second time. The patient, a middle-aged man, expresses gratitude to the donor and their family.
The patient, who remains anonymous, underwent the transplant after previous attempts to reconstruct his face were unsuccessful. The procedure included transplanting two-thirds of the scalp, forehead, upper and lower eyelids, eye sockets, nose, cheeks, jawbones, upper teeth, salivary glands, nerves, muscles, and skin.
The man is recovering well, breathing independently, and is expected to resume eating soon. However, lifelong medication is necessary to prevent rejection of the new face.
This is the second successful face transplant at the Cleveland hospital. The first took place in December 2008 under the supervision of Dr. Maria Siemionow. Globally, about 12 successful face transplants have been performed.
