Strike Disrupts Air and Train Traffic in Belgium
brussels - The air, train, and other traffic in Belgium has been significantly disrupted by union actions. Brussels Airport had to cancel four out of ten flights, and there are also problems at Charleroi Airport. Various workers, including baggage handlers, security guards, conductors, and teachers, went on strike on Monday in anger over possible pension cuts.
Brussels Airport and Brussels-Charleroi usually serve many Dutch passengers. 'Given the expected significant impact on handlers and security staff, a large number of flights will need to be canceled or rescheduled,' warns the national airport. Flights that proceed may experience some delays.
A large portion of trains are also at a standstill on Monday. Only one out of three intercity trains are running, and only one out of five sprinters. As a result, more Belgians seem to have opted for driving, leading to significantly more traffic jams than usual.
Unions are taking action because parties attempting to form a government are reportedly planning to make cuts to the pension system. A large demonstration is taking place in Brussels on Monday.
