Stockholm University Found Guilty of Discrimination Against Turkish Student
stockholm, sweden - Stockholm University has been found guilty of discrimination against a Turkish student named Fatma Zehra S. by rejecting her internship application on the grounds of Turkey's blocking of Sweden's NATO entry.
In a recent development, Stockholm University has been found guilty of discrimination by Sweden's Discrimination Ombudsman (DO) for rejecting the internship application of a Turkish student named Fatma Zehra S. on the basis of Turkey's hindering Sweden's NATO entry. According to a report by the Swedish state radio SR, the DO's statement indicated that after evaluating the application made by the student on December 5, 2022, it was determined that ethnic discrimination was exercised against the student, leading to Stockholm University being found guilty of discrimination.
It can be recalled that Fatma Zehra S, a 3rd-year Psychology student at Istanbul Ibn Haldun University, had applied for an internship at Stockholm University under the European Union (EU) grant program Erasmus+ on November 23, 2022. In response to an email sent to the academician Professor Per Carlbring expressing her desire to participate in a research project led by him, Fatma Zehra S received a reply stating, 'Dear Fatma, I would have liked to host you as a guest, but I have to reject your application because Turkey has hindered Sweden's NATO entry. I'm sorry.'
Fatma Zehra S lodged a complaint against Stockholm University to the DO on December 5, 2022. In response, the Vice Chairman of the Psychology Department at the university, Torun Lindholm Ojmyr, sent an apology letter to Fatma Zehra S, acknowledging that Professor Carlbring's behavior was inappropriate and wrong.
Despite the negative experience she faced, Fatma Zehra S mentioned that her application was accepted by a different teacher in the psychology department of the same university.
