A stampede broke out at a temple in the Andhra Pradesh state of India as 4 thousand people gathered to visit the temple for free during a Hindu holiday. The Hindu holiday started in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, on January 10th, where people rushed to the ticket counter to receive the free tokens.
As the doors opened for the approximately 2 thousand-year-old temple, a stampede occurred among those who had been queuing since Wednesday.
Officials reported that, according to initial assessments, 6 people lost their lives and dozens were injured.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased in a social media post.
