washington - American special prosecutor Jack Smith is reportedly planning to step down before Donald Trump's inauguration as president, according to The New York Times.

Smith is said to be wrapping up his work before Trump is sworn in as the new president in January. He does not want to risk being fired 'within two seconds' and then have others take over the cases. Smith is still determining how exactly he wants to conclude his work, as reported by The New York Times.

The two cases led by Smith involve the withholding of classified documents and Trump's efforts to remain in power after his electoral defeat in 2020. These are federal cases that will be terminated now that Trump has been elected as the new president. In two other cases at the state level, it remains unclear what the implications of Trump's election win will be.
