Spanish Government Fractured by Sex Scandal Involving Party Leader
barcelona - A sex scandal involving the leader of the Spanish government party Sumar has rocked the country's political landscape, leaving the party in turmoil.
The scandal erupted after party leader and founder Errejón (40) abruptly announced his departure from politics on Thursday. In a cryptic statement, he referred to 'mistakes' without offering a clear apology. Shortly after his resignation, actress and TV presenter Elisa Mouliaa announced that she had filed a police report against Errejón for attempted assault.
Earlier, feminist journalist Cristina Fallaras had hinted at the case in her writings about a woman being harassed by 'a known politician from Madrid.' She described the individual as 'a real psychopath,' although Errejón's involvement was not yet confirmed.
Mouliaa detailed in her police report an incident at a 2021 party where Errejón allegedly locked her in a room, touched her against her will, and made her feel like a victim of sexual misconduct. The complaint is now with the Madrid court for review.
The leadership of Sumar publicly apologized, with Amanda Andrades, responsible for feminism in the party, expressing empathy for the victims. Measures, including mandatory training on preventing sexual abuse, were announced to prevent such incidents in the future.
Party members and Spanish women expressed shock and betrayal over Errejón's downfall, highlighting the need for accountability. Errejón, a prominent figure in Spanish politics, co-founded the left-wing Podemos party in 2014, later leaving to establish Más Madrid and join the Sumar movement.
Prime Minister Sánchez, known for his feminist stance, expressed confidence in Sumar and Díaz, emphasizing his government's commitment to gender equality. The conservative opposition criticized the left-wing parties for alleged hypocrisy, calling for an investigation into the handling of Errejón's behavior.
