South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was suspended from his presidency due to martial law declaration, has been detained after being investigated for corruption allegations.
The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) officials took action this morning to enforce the arrest warrant on Yoon. He was taken into custody at the presidential residence and brought to the CIO office in Gwacheon, south of Seoul, for questioning.
Yoon, who faces accusations of trying to prevent lawmakers from voting against his removal by sending military forces to the parliament, has become the first president to be detained in South Korea.
Despite calling the investigation illegal, Yoon stated in a message after his arrest, "I have decided to face the CIO to prevent a scandal that could lead to bloodshed."
The Western District Court of South Korea had issued an arrest warrant for Yoon on charges of "insurrection" and "abuse of power" on December 31, 2024. Yet, the execution of the warrant was hindered on January 3 when there was a commotion between police officers and Presidential Security Service (PSS) officials at the official residence.
Unlike the previous attempt, Yoon offered no resistance this time when the authorities arrived at the presidential residence for his arrest.
