berlin, germany - Decades of avoiding collaboration with the far-right in Germany shattered as conservative parties push for stricter asylum policies.
Collaboration with Far-Right in Germany
Historically taboo, right-wing parties in Germany unite to tighten asylum rules. The proposal aims to block all asylum applications at a controlled border under EU emergency law, effectively shutting out undocumented individuals.
The vote in the Bundestag saw 348 representatives in favor, 345 against, with ten abstentions. Following the decision, the outgoing left-wing government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz protested, leading to chaotic scenes in parliament.
Recent terror incidents involving illegal migrants have fueled the conservative push. CDU leader Friedrich Merz cited a Saudi man's attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg, where six died and hundreds were injured. Merz highlighted the perpetrator's known criminal record and the failure of authorities to prevent the attack.
The shift in policy marks a departure from Angela Merkel's lenient approach to migration. Merz emphasized a zero-tolerance stance towards illegal migration, signaling a crackdown on undocumented individuals receiving benefits in Germany.
Chancellor Scholz defended his government's tougher stance on migration, pointing out increased deportations and the introduction of a payment card system for refugees. However, he expressed doubts about the legality of the conservative proposals, warning of the ramifications of breaching EU law.
