serbia - Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić apologizes for voting in favor of a UN resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine due to fatigue.
President's Apology for Voting Mistake
President Vučić of Serbia admitted the country's error in voting for a UN resolution denouncing Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The resolution was approved by the UN General Assembly on February 24 with 93 countries in favor and 18 against, including the US. Serbia, which intended to abstain, accidentally voted in favor.
Despite Serbia's positive stance towards Russia, President Vučić acknowledged Ukraine as a 'friendly country' and affirmed the sovereignty of Crimea and Donbas as Ukrainian territories. The voting error may have political implications, prompting the swift apology from Vučić.
The UN resolution explicitly labels Russia as the aggressor state and calls for the complete withdrawal of troops. The US initially refrained from naming Russia as the aggressor, but EU-led modifications included the terminology 'Russian large-scale invasion of Ukraine,' leading to a split vote where Russia opposed and the US abstained.
Both versions of the resolution were ultimately adopted.
