Botanical scientists have successfully cultivated a long-lost tree species from a 1000-year-old seed found in a desert cave, which may have been the source of a healing balm mentioned in ancient texts.
During an archaeological excavation in the lower Wadi el-Makkuk region north of Jerusalem, the ancient seed was found to be intact. However, it was initially unidentifiable. The seed was planted over twelve years ago for further investigation.
This tree species, possibly linked to the Biblical 'tsori' with healing properties, was named 'Sheba' by Dr. Sarah Sallon who led the team. The findings were published in a recent study revealing secrets of this mysterious specimen.
The seed from the Judean desert was germinated with hormones and fertilizer, resulting in a small shoot emerging weeks later. The plant was dated back to between 993 and 1202 based on carbon dating.
Subsequent DNA analysis confirmed the tree belongs to the Commiphora genus, suggesting potential medicinal properties similar to 'guggulsterols' known for cancer-fighting properties.
Although not the exact Judese balm, the tree is closely related and contains valuable medicinal compounds, possibly being the source of the ancient healing balm called tsori.
