santorini island, egean sea - Seismic activity continues on Santorini Island with the most likely scenario being a 6 magnitude earthquake.
Seismic Activity in Santorini
Recent seismic movements in the Egean Sea have put Santorini Island on high alert. Seismologist Akis Tselentis suggests a potential 6 magnitude earthquake as the most likely scenario. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) warns that the effects of a possible earthquake could reach our country.
According to AFAD, the region has experienced over 7,700 earthquakes with magnitudes over 3, the largest being 5.2. The seismic activity, which has been ongoing for weeks, poses potential risks for Turkey's coasts.
AFAD Meeting on Potential Risks
Yesterday, AFAD held a meeting to discuss the recent seismic activity in Santorini Island and the potential risks it poses. Deputy Minister of Interior Münir Karaloğlu chaired the meeting, where they evaluated the possibility of a larger earthquake, tsunami, or volcanic eruption affecting our coasts.
The meeting concluded that the ongoing seismic activity could potentially lead to volcanic movements, which might result in volcanic ash being carried by the wind or the risk of a post-earthquake tsunami affecting our country.
Santorini Still on Alert
Despite over 11,000 evacuations on Santorini Island, the alarm status continues as seismic activity persists. Seismologist Akis Tselentis emphasizes the likelihood of a 6 magnitude earthquake, stating that the seismic signs still indicate an impending earthquake.
Tselentis warns that a 6 magnitude earthquake could heavily impact Oia, while a 7 magnitude earthquake could result in a significant tsunami.
