santorini, greece - Greece is on high alert as seismic activity rises in Santorini and other Aegean islands, leading to cancellations and evacuations.
Seismic Activity in Santorini Raises Concern in Greece
Greece is on high alert following increased seismic activity in Santorini and other Aegean islands. The Greek Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister, Vassilis Kikilias, announced precautionary measures after more than 380 small earthquakes have been recorded since January 24 in the region.
A critical meeting was held in Athens led by Prime Minister Mitsotakis to discuss potential measures against a major earthquake. Minister Kikilias emphasized the preventive nature of the measures taken, stating that they are on high alert and urging citizens to follow expert advice.
As a result of the seismic activity, schools on four islands, including Santorini, were temporarily closed, cultural events were canceled, and residents were advised to avoid crowded indoor spaces. Search and rescue teams and drones were deployed to Santorini as a precaution.
The fear of a major earthquake has led to a rush to leave the islands, with many seeking refuge in Athens. Flight and ferry ticket prices surged due to high demand, causing concerns in the tourism sector.
Although over 200 small earthquakes have been recorded in the sea and surrounding islands, the Civil Protection Ministry stated that they are not related to volcanic activity. The Director of the Geodynamic Institute reported a significant increase in seismic activity, with 185 earthquakes measuring above magnitude 3 in the past 10 days.
