spain - Ryanair reduces summer flights to Spain by 800,000 seats blaming high airport tax, while shifting capacity to other countries.
Ryanair Reducing Flights to Spain
Ryanair, the Irish airline, is cutting back on flights to Spain this summer due to what it calls 'excessive tax' at Spanish airports. A total of 800,000 fewer seats will be available compared to last summer.
Ryanair will no longer operate flights to Jerez de la Frontera and Valladolid, and will reduce flights to Vigo, Santiago de Compostela, Zaragoza, Santander, and Asturias airport, according to a press release.
For years, Ryanair has been critical of the fees charged by the Spanish national airport operator, Aena. Aena claims its average fee is 10.35 euros per passenger, among the lowest in Europe.
Ryanair intends to shift its capacity to countries like Italy, Sweden, Croatia, Hungary, and Morocco, where authorities actively encourage aviation growth, the budget airline stated.
