Russian Hackers Spied on Georgia for Years, Bloomberg Reports
tbilisi - Russian hackers have been able to spy on Georgian ministries, government agencies, and major companies for years, according to Bloomberg. The breach occurred between 2017 and 2020.
Russian hackers had access to key ministries such as Foreign Affairs and Finance, the central bank, and important energy and telecom providers, as revealed by documents seen by Bloomberg. They also infiltrated oil terminals, media companies, and government departments. The Kremlin had the capability to disrupt and sabotage critical infrastructure. In addition, members of the election commission had their email addresses hacked.
Georgia, a former Soviet state in the Caucasus, has long sought to distance itself from its Russian neighbor by seeking closer ties with the United States, the European Union, and NATO. However, the government now seems to be leaning towards a more pro-Russian stance. The country will hold elections on Saturday, offering Georgians a choice between the two ideologies.
