Rumors of Turkish Threat Fuel Rum Arms Order from US
The Greek Cypriot army, fueled by a 'only enemy is Turkey' policy, prepares to receive a list of cheap or free weapons from the US before President Joe Biden steps down. The Greek Cypriot army, which uses old Russian weapon systems, has ordered a variety of items including multi-purpose helicopters, naval patrol ships, and air defense systems. The Greek Cypriot leader, Nikos Hristodulidis, has prepared a list of urgent needs to the US, including helicopters that can be used in firefighting, as well as naval and air defense systems.
The Greek Cypriot administration, which excludes Turkey from energy resources by making parceling agreements in the Eastern Mediterranean with Israel and Egypt, could not meet its needs for ships and helicopters due to being 'very expensive.' The Greek Cypriots were able to prepare a list thanks to a decree signed by US President Joe Biden last week, allowing the Greek Cypriots to purchase surplus military and ammunition materials from the American army at a cheaper price directly from the US government instead of the private sector.
From military boots to light infantry rifles, the Greek Cypriot administration has prepared a long list of ammunition and equipment. They plan to obtain a significant portion of their needs for free through donation of materials that the US army has taken out of use.
Another request from the Greek Cypriots is the modernization of the Andreas Papandreu Air Base in the city of Paphos opened by the American army and the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base in Mari (formerly a Turkish village of Tatlısu). The naval base currently has a shallow depth where small coast guard boats can dock and a small pier. A US engineering battalion is preparing a helicopter pad for the naval base.
Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos emphasized that their military forces are far from reaching the latest technology weapon systems, highlighting that their most important needs are basic materials.
