Riots in Lisbon after police shoot immigrant dead
lisbon - Riots have broken out in Lisbon after a 43-year-old Cape Verdean immigrant was shot dead by police officers. The police reported more than sixty incidents, with widespread vandalism, fires, and injuries.
Riots have erupted in Lisbon following the shooting of a 43-year-old Cape Verdean man by police officers. The police have indicated over sixty incidents during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, resulting in substantial damage, fires, and injuries to four individuals, including two officers. Three individuals have been arrested.
Many of the disturbances occurred in the impoverished neighborhood of Cova da Moura, according to local media reports. Social media is divided on whether the police's actions leading to the Cape Verdean man's death were brutal and racist or in self-defense against the resident of Cova da Moura. Police supporters describe Cova da Moura as a slum similar to the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Lisbon police force is also handling security for the SL Benfica versus Feyenoord match on Wednesday evening at the Estádio da Luz. They claim to be conducting a significant operation to prevent any further disturbances during the event, which is considered a high-risk occasion. More patrols have been deployed, and streets have been cordoned off. On Tuesday evening, reports emerged that dozens of Feyenoord supporters were attacked by Benfica fans in and outside a café near the stadium, although the incident reportedly did not result in serious consequences.
