eastbourne - Bear, a retired British police dog, successfully locates a missing man leading to a heartwarming reunion.
Once a police dog, always a police dog? Bear, a retired British police dog, played a crucial role in ensuring the safe return of a missing man.
Remarkably, on his twelfth birthday, the German Shepherd accompanied his owner for a walk in Eastbourne, a large coastal town in southeast England. It was Bear's first significant walk since undergoing a major operation. During their return journey, Bear's sharp sense of smell detected something unusual.
Instantly switching into 'work mode,' Bear began barking. His owner had to stop and followed the dog to dense bushes. There, Julia Pope, a former police officer, discovered a vulnerable man who appeared disoriented. "His clothes were wet. He had fallen, was cold, and unable to stand on his own. I am not sure if he would have survived the night. It was cold, darkness was setting in, and there was no one around," she told Sky News.
Unknown to Julia, the police were already searching for the missing man who had been reported missing. In their search efforts, the police had driven past the location where the man was found, but without success. "Bear's actions led to a stroke of incredible luck!" exclaimed Julia, who has been caring for the dog for four years.
Leading the way, Bear guided the woman as she helped the man to his feet, and they walked back to the road. Upon being informed, a police car swiftly transported the missing man back home where he could be reunited with his family.
Although Bear has been retired since 2020, he continues to serve as a welfare and therapy dog for the police force in Sussex County. The Thin Blue Paw Foundation, a charity dedicated to supporting former police dogs, provides assistance. They are extremely proud of Bear's heroic act.
