Reshuffling of Ministerial Positions Amid Government Crisis in Germany
berlin - Two ministers in the German cabinet are set to take on broader responsibilities as a result of the government crisis, replacing departing ministers from the liberal FDP party.
Transport Minister Volker Wissing will also be in charge of the Justice portfolio. Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir is set to assume the role of Minister of Education.
Wissing, formerly associated with the FDP, has decided to leave the party in order to remain in his ministerial position.
However, other FDP officials did not follow suit. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has accepted the resignations of Wissing's party colleagues, including party leader and Finance Minister Christian Lindner. SPD's Jörg Kukies will take over Lindner's responsibilities.
The German political landscape is divided on the future of the SPD-Greens minority government. Chancellor Olaf Scholz, facing pressure from the opposition, is expected to hold a vote of confidence in parliament, with Scholz aiming for January, a timeline deemed too late by other parties.
Scholz recently had a discussion with CDU opposition leader Friedrich Merz, but no breakthrough was reported, according to a government source cited by Reuters.
