Record Turnout in Georgia as Early Voting Begins for New President
atlanta - Voters in the southern state of Georgia have turned out in record numbers for early voting in the upcoming presidential election between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump.
At least 252,000 voters had cast their ballots by the end of the afternoon at polling stations specially opened for early voting. This was nearly twice the number of votes compared to 2020, when 136,000 voters cast their ballots on the first day of early voting.
Georgia is considered a swing state, meaning residents according to polls do not have a clear preference for either of the presidential candidates. The significance of the high turnout at this stage for the final outcome remains unclear. Georgia carries 16 electoral votes. The candidate with at least 270 Electoral votes will become the new president.
Joe Biden, who exited the race earlier, narrowly won the state in 2020 against Trump by just twelve thousand votes. Four years prior, Republican Hillary Clinton had succeeded there, along with many of her party fellows in the years before against the Democrats. Other key swing states on November 5 will include Pennsylvania (19), Michigan (15), Nevada (6), and North Carolina (16).
