Unique Roman Era Finding in Germany
In Germany, a 600-year-old miniature gold lock from the Roman era was unearthed, described as unparalleled in Europe by archaeologist Michael Rind. The lock, found by a metal detectorist in Westphalia region, is a miniature version of the locks used in Rome in the 3rd and 4th centuries.
Archaeologist Michael Rind stated, 'There is no similar piece like this gold miniature lock in Europe.' Metal detectorist Constantin Fried, who found the lock, expressed his surprise at the discovery, noting that traditional Roman locks are usually larger and made of iron or bronze. Experts examining the lock discovered that the core of the cylinder is made of iron. Detailed computer tomography scans revealed the presence of a spring, bolt, base plate, guide rail, and pin in the internal mechanism of the lock.
The analysis showcased the high level of Roman craftsmanship in the lock, offering insights into trade between North Germany and Rome in the 3rd century. Researchers speculate that the miniature lock might have been used to secure jewel boxes or chests similar to modern counterparts.
