moscow - Russian scientists have discovered a remarkably well-preserved baby mammoth in eastern Siberia.
Experts say that Yana is the best-preserved mammoth carcass in the world and one of only seven whole remains ever found. Research is underway to determine the exact age at death, currently estimated to be one year or slightly older.
The carcass is being exhibited at the university in the city of Yakutsk. Yana weighs 180 kilograms, is 1.2 meters tall, and 2 meters long.
The carcass was unearthed near a research station where remains of other prehistoric animals have been found. The frozen soil (permafrost) in the area acts as a natural freezer that preserves well.
