President Trump Reaches Agreement with Mexican President to Stop Migration
washington - President Donald Trump has announced that he reached an agreement with Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum to end migration from Mexico to the United States.
According to Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has agreed in a conversation between the two on Wednesday to stop migration from her country to the United States. "This effectively closes our southern border," said the incoming president on his social media platform Truth Social.
Sheinbaum quickly nuanced that claim on X. "We emphasize that Mexico's position is not to close borders, but to build bridges between governments and peoples," said the president. "In our conversation, I explained to President Trump the strategy that Mexico is following to address the migration phenomenon, with respect for human rights. Thanks to this strategy, migrants are taken care of before they reach the border."
The Mexican president criticized Trump on Tuesday after he announced plans to impose tariffs on products from Mexico and Canada. Sheinbaum threatened economic measures against the U.S. if Trump continues with the plans, which her government believes would not only harm Mexico but also cost hundreds of thousands of jobs in the U.S. and make life more expensive for Americans.
