port-au-prince - An aircraft belonging to the American budget airline Spirit Airlines was shot at while approaching the airport of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The company reported that a cabin crew member was injured.
Spirit Airlines and other American airlines have decided to temporarily suspend their flights to Haiti.
Spirit Airlines diverted the flight, which had originated in Florida, to the Dominican Republic. The damaged aircraft safely landed there and was subsequently taken out of service. Multiple authorities have launched an investigation.
Haiti is extremely impoverished and the Caribbean country is considered politically unstable. Violent gangs had been shooting at aircraft repeatedly in recent weeks. Last month, a United Nations helicopter was hit above Port-au-Prince.
