Palestinians Return to North Gaza on Foot After Israeli Withdrawal
tel aviv - Thousands of Palestinians return to their homes in North Gaza, marking a significant moment for Hamas and Israel.
Israeli Withdrawal and Return of Palestinians
Following the Israeli army's early morning withdrawal from the corridor dividing the Gaza Strip, Palestinians are returning en masse. The return is part of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which is back on track after tense negotiations. It is expected that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians will move from south to north in the coming days and weeks.
The Palestinians are instructed not to approach Israeli soldiers in the buffer zone at the border. Any movement of terrorists or weapons northwards would violate the agreement, although it is challenging to monitor. Palestinians are allowed to walk freely north, while vehicles must take a route further east with inspections by American and Egyptian security personnel.
Social media is filled with images of the massive influx, showing elderly men, joyful children, cheering women, and Hamas fighters welcoming the returnees. Hamas sees this as a major triumph.
However, some Israeli politicians, like Itamar-Ben Gvir, who left the government in protest against the agreement, view the return as a 'humiliation.' They also see their hopes for partial annexation of Gaza fading as Palestinians return in large numbers.
Challenges and Rebuilding Efforts
Approximately 80% of Gaza's population was displaced due to the conflict, with many living in temporary shelters. Despite the return, rebuilding efforts face obstacles as a significant portion of buildings are damaged or destroyed. The lack of construction materials hinders immediate reconstruction, and debris clearance alone will take years.
The United Nations reported that 69% of Gaza's buildings were damaged or destroyed, highlighting the immense task ahead. Many returning Gazans feared their departure would be permanent, especially after proposals suggesting other countries should absorb Palestinian populations.
Continued Tensions and Deal Implementation
The return of Gazans was delayed by a dispute over the deal's execution. Hamas released four female soldiers last week, but Israel blocked Palestinian returns due to a disagreement. The situation was resolved, and the return proceeded after the release of a civilian woman as part of the agreement.
Israel and Hamas are still negotiating the release of additional prisoners, with uncertainty surrounding the fate of some hostages. The process remains delicate as both sides navigate post-conflict challenges and commitments.
