tbilisi - Opposition leader Nika Gvaramia from the Akhali party in Georgia has been beaten and detained by police. Tensions have been high in the country since the elections on October 26, which were won by the ruling party, Georgian Dream. The European Union does not recognize the election results.

Opposition leader Nika Gvaramia of the Akhali party in Georgia has been reportedly beaten and arrested by police officers. The country has been experiencing unrest following the elections held on October 26, with Georgian Dream, led by the current Prime Minister Irakli Kobachidze, emerging as the winner. However, the European Union has refused to acknowledge the election results, leading to further political tensions.

The newly formed government has recently decided to suspend talks with the EU regarding a possible accession until 2028. In response to this decision, pro-European demonstrators have been gathering in the evenings to protest against the government, resulting in clashes between protesters and police.

The French-born president of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, also does not recognize the election results. Zourabichvili, who previously served as a French diplomat and ambassador to Tbilisi, obtained Georgian citizenship twenty years ago and went on to become a minister. She assumed the presidency of the country at the end of 2018.
