Opposition in Germany Calls for Changes in Citizenship Law
germany - The leader of the Christian Democratic Union in Germany, Friedrich Merz, suggests that the law facilitating the transition to German citizenship should be revised.
The chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Germany, Friedrich Merz, who is also the main opposition candidate for the Chancellorship, has stated that the law that eases the transition to German citizenship and allows dual citizenship should be revised.
Merz pointed out that out of more than 200,000 people who applied for German citizenship in 2024, 80% wished to maintain their original citizenship, which he argued would create additional problems for the country. Emphasizing that dual citizenship should not become a standard rule in German law, Merz stated that "at least, in case we realize a mistake regarding individuals who have committed crimes, their German citizenship should be revocable at the same level."
Merz highlighted that dual citizenship has been granted in the past due to specific reasons, and he stated, "Dual citizenship should always remain an exception that needs to be justified and should not become a permanent rule."
