North Korea's Stance on US Nuclear Disarmament
North Korea responds to US calls for nuclear disarmament, labeling the goal as unattainable and impractical. The North Korean Foreign Ministry issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to President's nuclear power development policy. The ministry strongly criticized the trilateral meeting held in Germany by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul, condemning their provocative actions and expressing serious concerns about escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula and its vicinity.
The statement emphasized North Korea's determination to continue using its nuclear weapons as a self-defense mechanism as long as threats from the US and its allies persist. It denounced the US's unrealistic disarmament goal as sheer folly and reiterated its rejection of American pressure. The ministry warned that any provocation from hostile countries would be met with resolute retaliation.
North Korea accused the US of ignoring the root causes of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula for the past 30 years. It stated that the pressure from the US would only further strengthen its strategic power and deter threats and blackmail from the US and its allies.
The joint statement issued by the US, Japan, and South Korea following their meeting at the Munich Security Conference reiterated their commitment to North Korea's complete denuclearization. The ministers expressed serious concerns about North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, as well as its military cooperation with Russia.
