North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile into Sea of Japan
seoul/tokyo - In a recent event, North Korea launched a ballistic missile towards the Sea of Japan, causing tension in the region.
In 2023, the US, South Korea, and Japan held a joint meeting to discuss military cooperation in response to the threat posed by North Korea. According to the Japanese coast guard, the missile was fired towards the Sea of Japan and landed in the water.
Secretary of State Blinken is visiting South Korea to ensure political stability, particularly in the complex relationship between South Korea and Japan. On the day of the meeting, the deadline for the arrest warrant against the suspended president Yoon Suk-yeol expires.
Last Friday, an arrest team attempted to apprehend Yoon, but was unsuccessful as he was protected by a military unit and security officials. Yoon is suspected of rebellion following his unexpected announcement of a military state of emergency.
Not everyone in South Korea supports closer ties with Japan, given Japan's brutal colonial rule over both Koreas from 1910 to 1945. With the suspension of the pro-American President Yoon Suk-yeol, who declared a state of emergency in early December, the policies towards the United States and Japan have also come under scrutiny.
