hamburg - The nightlife district of Hamburg, Germany, was partially evacuated on Saturday evening after an unexploded World War II bomb was discovered.

Approximately 5,000 residents were forced to leave their homes in the Sternschanze district, while the police also evacuated restaurants and bars in the area. The trendy Sternschanze is a popular destination for weekend outings.

The 250-kilo bomb was found during construction work on the grounds of a primary school. No one was allowed within a 500-meter radius. The evacuees were transported by bus to an emergency shelter.

Also, a suburban railway station in Hamburg, which is particularly busy on weekends, was located in the evacuated area. This caused disruptions in train traffic. Road closures led to traffic jams in the vicinity. According to NDR news channel, a wedding party in Sternschanze was also interrupted. The celebrants had to leave the restaurant where the wedding was taking place and find an alternate location.

Germany is accustomed to finding unexploded ordnance from World War II, originating from bombings by the Allies and Soviets. Most are safely disposed of by bomb disposal experts without incidents.
