New York Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, is facing accusations of corruption and fraud by the Public Prosecutor, including soliciting illegal foreign funds for his political career. This marks the first time a sitting mayor of the city has been indicted. Adams has denied the allegations, stating they are based on lies and retaliation for his criticism of President Joe Biden's administration policies.
The charges include five points, alleging that he solicited funds from abroad and misrepresented the origins of donations as coming from within the US. Prosecutors have long suspected him of accepting money from foreigners for his 2021 election campaign. Adams, who took office as mayor in 2022, intends to seek re-election next year. He has affirmed that he will not resign as mayor and will defend himself against the allegations.
He is accused of engaging in corrupt practices long before his mayoral candidacy, having served as Brooklyn Borough President in 2014. Prosecutors claim he accepted bribes, including luxurious trips funded by wealthy foreign businessmen, and received favors from at least one Turkish government official.
Federal agents conducted an investigation at the official residence of New York Mayor Eric Adams, Gracie Mansion, on Thursday. Images from The New York Times show approximately ten individuals in dark suits entering the premises. Adams' lawyer, Alex Spiro, stated that the agents were there to inspect his devices. Last year, the FBI seized two phones and an iPad for examination. Spiro criticized the federal agents' actions, labeling them as a spectacle aimed at seizing the mayor's phone once again.
