New York Introduces Police Officers on Night Subways to Improve Safety
new york - In an effort to enhance safety on the night subways, New York City will deploy police officers on board every subway train during the night for the next six months.
New York City has announced a new initiative to increase safety on the night subways by having a police officer on board every train. The Governor, Kathy Hochul, stated that no one should fear becoming a victim of crime while commuting to work, school, or enjoying a night out. As part of a six-month trial, three hundred police officers will be deployed to ride the subways between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM.
This trial is a part of a broader safety package for public transport. In addition to officers on trains, law enforcement will increase patrols at stations and implement modifications to prevent fare evasion. Improved lighting will also be installed to enhance visibility at stations.
New York's subway system, one of the oldest and largest in the United States, has relatively low crime rates compared to the rest of the country. However, there were nine murders reported in the subway system last year. In a horrifying incident in December, a man set a woman on fire inside a subway car.
