The congestion fee system for vehicles in the US has been introduced in New York for the first time. According to the New York Times, in an effort to reduce traffic congestion, a new system has been introduced in New York.
Under this system, individuals entering areas around Central Park South such as Empire State, Times Square, and Wall Street with their vehicles will now have to pay up to $9 daily. Those wishing to enter these areas with their vehicles during peak hours will pay $9, while at other times, they will pay $2.25.
The congestion fee is planned to increase to $12 by 2028 and $15 by 2031. The aim of this system is to improve public transportation infrastructure.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul proposed this system two years ago but it was not implemented due to complaints and has since been revised.
The then elected US President, Donald Trump, had expressed his opposition to this system.
