New Outbreak Alarm in China and First Bird Flu Death in the US
china, india, us, louisiana - An increase in cases of human metapneumovirus causing concern in China, while the US records its first death related to bird flu.
Five years after the global impact of COVID-19, eyes are turning to China once again as an increase in human metapneumovirus cases is sparking worries. The virus has also spread to neighboring India. In northern China, a rise in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases has raised fears of a new outbreak. Chinese officials have mentioned that HMPV infections are particularly spreading among those under 14.
HMPV symptoms resemble those of flu or the common cold, including cough, fever, stuffy nose, and shortness of breath. The virus can lead to upper and lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis in people of all age groups, though it is most commonly seen in children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The incubation period of HMPV is estimated to be between 3-6 days, with an average duration similar to other respiratory diseases, varying in severity. Cases of HMPV tend to increase at the end of winter and beginning of spring in temperate climates, with the main mode of transmission believed to be through coughing and sneezing. Close contact like touching and handshakes can also spread the virus.
The public is being encouraged to use preventive measures such as wearing masks and maintaining social distance. Authorities have increased monitoring programs and provided additional healthcare services in areas with high infection rates to halt the spread of the virus. Kan Biao, the Head of the China Disease Control and Prevention Center, noted in a press conference the increasing trend of HMPV cases among those under 14.
In the US state of Louisiana, a person has died from the H5N1 bird flu virus, marking the first known death associated with bird flu in the country. Officials stated that no other cases of H5N1 have been reported in the state, and there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission risk. The deceased individual was hospitalized in December after contracting the virus, experiencing severe respiratory symptoms as the first serious case of bird flu in the US.
