NASA Warns of Increased Probability of Asteroid Impact on Earth
NASA has announced that the chances of the asteroid named 2024 YR4 colliding with Earth by 2032 have increased to 3.1%. The 54-meter-wide space object could release 8 megatons of energy upon impact, posing a threat to a major city. Despite the potential risk, scientists still believe there is a 96.9% chance that the asteroid will miss Earth. The asteroid, first detected on December 27, 2024, in Chile, is being closely monitored by international space agencies to potentially alter its course to avoid collision.
2024 YR4 Asteroid
The asteroid 2024 YR4 was initially identified by the Rio Hurtado telescope in Chile. Although the impact of the asteroid is unlikely to cause widespread destruction, it could result in significant damage within a 50-kilometer radius. Potential areas for impact include the eastern Pacific, northern South America, Africa, and South Asia. Efforts are underway to track the asteroid's trajectory and consider methods to divert it from a collision course.
