- NASA has released a new report regarding the increased probability of the asteroid 2024 YR4 impacting Earth on December 22, 2032.
NASA's Latest Findings on Asteroid 2024 YR4
NASA has revealed that the probability of the asteroid 2024 YR4 colliding with Earth within the next 7 years has risen to 3.1%. The asteroid, estimated to be approximately 54 meters in diameter, could unleash around 8 megatons of energy upon impact, posing a potential threat to a major city.
Although the chances of the asteroid hitting Earth are still at 96.9%, scientists continue to monitor its trajectory closely. Initially detected on December 27, 2024, by the Rio Hurtado telescope in Chile, the risk of impact by 2024 YR4 was first reported at 1.33%, which was later updated to 2%.
Potential impact zones include the eastern Pacific, northern South America, Africa, and South Asia.
