NASA Astronaut Suni Williams Conducts First Spacewalk After 7 Months

US astronaut Suni Williams, one of the two astronauts stranded in space, completed her first spacewalk after spending 7 months at the International Space Station (ISS). In footage broadcasted by NASA TV, moments of Williams and Wilmore, who have been stranded at the station for 7 months, performing the spacewalk were captured.

During the spacewalk, which took place while the ISS was orbiting 260 miles (420 kilometers) above Turkmenistan, female astronaut Williams could be heard over the radio saying, 'I'm going outside'.

US spacewalks were suspended after water leaked into an astronaut's spacesuit cooling system, but NASA later announced that the issue was resolved. Williams and Wilmore were sent to the ISS on June 5, 2024, for a week-long test flight aboard Boeing's new Starliner capsule. However, due to a technical glitch on Starliner, the return date of the two astronauts was postponed, and NASA ordered the capsule to return empty.

With the delay in SpaceX's backup capsule launch date, it is estimated that the two astronauts may not return to Earth until the end of March or early April, extending their stay on the space station to approximately 10 months.
