Scientist Unravels Mystery of Ghostly Presence
A scientist believes to have uncovered the mystery behind ghostly phenomena surrounding a railroad track near Old Sheep Island in South Carolina. Legend has it that a man working on the track was hit by a train and lost his life, leading to his wife wandering the area with a lantern after his death.
Locals have reported eerie glows above the track, strange orb lights floating in the sky with varying colors, and unsettling occurrences such as shaking cars, slamming doors, and whispering voices near houses along the railroad.
Susan Hough, a geophysicist at the Earthquake Hazards Program, suggests a natural explanation for the spooky activities in the town. In 2023, she discovered a 'kink' in the track, indicating it might have been built along a fault line. Her research on seismology in the area revealed details of a powerful earthquake in 1886 near Charleston, where a railroad south of Summerville had shifted approximately 4.5 meters due to the quake.
The ghostly sightings are linked to the earthquakes, according to Hough. The shaking cars and slamming doors could be attributed to tremors, while the luminous orbs might be 'earthquake lights' commonly observed in areas with seismic activity. A persistent glow could also be associated with earthquakes.
