buenos aires, argentina - The sudden appearance of a deep red color in a canal near Buenos Aires triggers fears of a possible leak from a nearby factory.
Canal Turns Mysteriously Red
A small canal near Buenos Aires turned a shocking red color on Thursday, sparking concerns of a possible leak from a nearby factory.
Residents of Avellaneda were surprised by the unusual color of the Sarandí canal on Sunday, accompanied by a nauseating smell in the area. Local newspaper La Verdad reported suspicions pointing towards a nearby tannery in the city.
This is not the first time the Sarandí canal has exhibited such a bizarre color. The locals have long been aware of the heavy pollution in the canal, with previous colors ranging from blueish to greenish, pink, and purplish, often with an oily film on the surface resembling oil, as mentioned by resident María Ducomls (52).
The regional Environmental Department is currently investigating the possible cause of the red color. Following reports of the canal turning red on the morning of Thursday, February 6, the organization stated that water samples were taken for chemical analysis to identify the organic substance responsible for the discoloration, believed to be an organic dye.
According to a journalist, the red color gradually dissipated over time.
