mexico - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded humorously to Donald Trump's proposal to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded humorously to Donald Trump's proposal to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America during a daily press briefing at the National Palace. Sheinbaum stated, 'Why don't we call North America 'Mexico America'? Sounds good, right? According to the Apatzingan Constitution, we can discuss this. Let's call North America 'Mexico America'.'
Referring to an old map from 1607, Sheinbaum reminded that the name 'Gulf of Mexico' has been internationally recognized since then. She also addressed Trump's recent comments targeting Mexico, saying, 'President Trump, forgive me, but I believe you have been misinformed. Mexico is governed by its people, and we continue to strengthen democracy here.'
In her speech, Sheinbaum mentioned the Apatzingan Constitution, which was declared in Apatzingan city on October 22, 1814, considered the first constitution created during the independence movement in Mexico.
The Gulf of Mexico was named by Spanish explorers after the discovery of the American continent, and has been known by that name on international maps since the early 16th century.
